Tabbed Keytags & Slot Readers
Last Updated: 09/25/2018

Many customers ask us what style of keytag they should order. Available styles include tabbed (aka s-style), rectangle, mini rectangle and oval. The question comes down to 2 things … personal preference and barcode scanner style.

First, what type of barcode reader or scanner are you using? Unless you are using an access control system, you are probably using a standard scanner – and in this case you can really use any keytag style, and the question really boils down to personal preference.

However, if you are using a slot style scanner (see picture), you must use a tabbed or s-style keytag. This is because when the keytag is on your client’s key ring, they need something to hold onto while they “swipe” the keytag through the scanner – that is what the tab is for.

In summary, if you use s slot style scanner, order tabbed keytags. If not, you are free to order any style.
